Event Information

Am I fit enough?
Anyone can participate in Capital to Coast, but you will need to achieve a certain level of fitness. The ride is designed to be fairly demanding, as you need to ‘earn’ your sponsorship money.  It is a ride not a race but the more you train the more you will enjoy the experience.  Check out the Top Tips page for training tips and advice.

How long will it take me to get to Brighton?
The average cyclist’s speed is 10 mph so would give an estimated time of 6 hours or 3 hours if doing the 30 mile route. This would differ depending on your cycling ability and how much training you have done before the ride.

There’s a few of us who want to take part. Can we register as a team?

Non-corporate teams are more than welcome to take part in Capital to Coast as long as there more than five members in the team. Each team member must fill in a separate registration form just ensure you complete the team section of the form.

Once you are registered as a team, all sponsorship money will be attributed to the team record.  The sponsorship target is £200 per person and this still applies to team members. e.g. if there are five members of the team then you will be expected to aim to raise at least £1000 as a team.

If you would like to set up a Corporate Team see the Corporate Team section of the website.

What happens after I register?

Once we have received your registration we will send you a Fundraising Pack.  We will also send you newsletters leading up to the ride, a Rider Pack, and if purchased, cycle jersey and coach voucher.

Top

What should I bring with me?
Your cycle jersey and coach voucher, if purchased.
Check the weather forecast the day before so that you know if you will need any wet weather gear.
If you have a mobile phone, make sure that it is charged and has credit.
There are no facilities for transporting any of your personal possessions to Hove on the day so make sure that whatever you bring is lightweight and can be carried either in your bike pouches or a light-weight bag to go on your back.
Top

Do I need to bring food with me?

We don't provide sandwiches along the route but there are refreshment stops along the route with free snacks and drink. It is advisable to bring some energy snacks or drink powder if you want. We do not advise that you use any high-energy products that you haven’t used before when cycling a similar distance.

There are sandwiches, snacks and drinks to buy at the end of the ride in Brighton.

Top

What happens if there is a problem with my bike on the day?
At every refreshment stop there are fully trained mechanics who will be happy to help you with any problems you have with your bike.  There is also a mobile mechanic who will be able to travel along the length of the route to offer assistance.  If you are in need of the mobile mechanic, either let the nearest marshal know or call the Helpline number on your security wristband.  The mechanics service is free of charge but you may be charged if they need to replace any parts on your bike.  We also advise that you take a puncture repair kit with you and a spare inner tube that fits your bike in case of an emergency.
Top

Are the roads closed off?
No. Public Highways are only closed when an event similar to this exceeds a higher number of participants. The route is set along country lanes and quieter roads so there is less traffic. However, you must still cycle sensibly in single file and obey the Highway code in order to avoid accidents.
Top

Do I have to wear a cycling helmet?
There is no law that says that you must wear a helmet whilst cycling although we strongly advise that you do so in order to reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident occurring.

What happens when I get to Brighton?

There’s a warm welcome waiting for you when you finish the ride and get to the Lawns in Brighton.  After you’ve cycled through the welcome sign you’ll be presented with a medal to mark your achievement and be made to feel like a hero for all the efforts you have made pre and during the event.

When you’ve gone through the de-registration area, check in at the coach desk if you have pre-purchased a return ticket to Kempton Park Racecourse. After that, put your bike in the specially erected bike pen* and take advantage of the wonderful sea air, whilst relaxing to the sound of waves gently lapping on the beautiful Hove beach.

*Capital to Coast or associated charities do not take responsibility for any personal items left at the bike pen on the day of the event.

Fundraising

Do I have to raise sponsorship if I take part in Capital to Coast?

YES! The ride was established 18 years ago as a cycling event to raise money for charity. That is the foundation of the ride and why we work so hard to make this an enjoyable event. We actively encourage every cyclist to raise as much money as they possibly can to benefit the charities and support the services that they provide.

The suggested minimum amount that we ask each participant to raise is £200 (£100 for under 16's).

What if I can’t raise £200?

The really important part if that you try as hard as you can to raise as much sponsorship as possible. We will give you loads of help with fundraising such as tips and sample fundraising emails.

You can also visit our Top Tips page for loads of great ideas>>

Also visit Virgin Money Giving to setup your fundraising page. It’s quick, easy and very effective!

You’ll be sending me a sponsorship envelope in the Fundraising Pack. Do I have to collect all my money before the ride?
No you don’t.  We know that a lot of sponsors will want to know that you have completed the ride before they hand over the cash!  However, you might ask someone for sponsorship who you won’t see for a while after the ride and some people just like to give you their donation immediately.  Whatever the reason you can hand in the money on the day and then send any more on.  Please do not hand in your sponsorship form if you haven’t finished collecting.  Make a photocopy and indicate which donors the money is applicable to.
Top

Where and how do I send sponsorship money?
We do not advise that you send cash through the post. Cheques should be made payable to Norwood - Capital to Coast (Norwood being the organising charity) and send to Capital To Coast, Norwood, Broadway House, 80-82 The Broadway, Stanmore, Middlesex HA7 4HB. If you send a personal cheque to cover cash that you have been given, please include a list of all the donors with their full postal addresses on a sponsorship form with the Gift Aid box ticked, if applicable, so that we can claim extra money on their donation.
Top

Can you explain Gift Aid to me please?

Gift Aid is the easiest way to ensure that all the sponsorship money that you raise means even more money for the charity that you fundraise for.  It doesn’t have any impact on your donors and all you have to do is make sure that they fill in their full name and address with postal code on the sponsorship form that you send to us.  It really is that easy and the benefit to the charities is huge.

Using Gift Aid means that for every pound your sponsors give, we get an extra 25 pence from the Inland Revenue, helping their contribution go further.  This means that £10 can be turned into £12.50 just so long as the donations are made through Gift Aid.  Imagine what a difference that could make and it doesn’t cost you or your sponsor a thing.  So if you want your sponsorship money to go further and achieve more, just make sure the box is ticked.  It’s that simple.

There are two exceptions to the rules however which we must abide by.

  • You cannot Gift Aid a donation made by yourself for an event for which you are a participant.
  • Donations paid with charity cheques/vouchers and company cheques are not able to go through Gift Aid.
