Norwood: Supporting thousands with learning disabilities
Thousands of individuals in the UK need extra support as a result of learning disabilities; Norwood aim to improve the lives of these vulnerable individuals through a variety of aid and support services across the UK. Spurred on by a passionate belief that everyone is capable of living life to the full, 2000 staff members and volunteers provide a range of Children and Family Services and Adult Learning Disability Services to help those with learning disabilities achieve their goals. Norwood requires £10 million annually just to continue operating. The charity’s visions and goals are invaluable to assisting in the integration of those with learning disabilities into assisting in ensuring that those with learning disabilities lead a full life.
Norwood Family Services and Learning Disability Support
Norwood offers special education services with facilities available to assist children as young as two right through to adults. Specialising in the development of children’s cognitive skills, The Hope Centre is just one of Norwood’s facilities designed to give those with learning disabilities the confidence to think independently. Services also include speech and language therapy alongside occupational therapy if required. Norwood also provide support to children on the autistic spectrum, working alongside schools such as the Jewish Community Secondary School(JCoSS) to help integrate children.
Norwood also operate recreational services including short break facilities designed specifically for those with learning disabilities. Buckets and Spades lodge offers a purpose built environment and round the clock care for those with learning disabilities who need a short break. Facilities are continuously being developed, with funding secured for a sensory room due to be built in the near future. Specially adapted picture cards and questionnaires help the lodge to obtain feedback directly from those who use the facilities. Facilities like Buckets and Spades are a fantastic way to help instil the skills required for later life. Unity is another of Norwood’s facilities designed to provide recreational facilities and support to those with learning difficulties; offering an array of activities and regular day trips that offer a priceless experience to those that need it most.
Charity Bike Ride – How Cycling London to Brighton Helps
Participating in the LA fitness Capital to Coast London to Brighton charity bike ride will help to raise £300,000 towards the £10 million a year needed to enable Norwood (and the Down’s Syndrome Association) to continue providing support to those who need it.Charity bike rides are a great way to raise money whilst enjoying a fantastic day out with friends and family.
